I make art to share my family’s story.

My sister Amber was shot 11 times as she was leaving her job as the branch manager of a library in Sacramento, CA in 2018. Vermi11ion is an exhibition focusing on my journey through the trial of my sister’s murderer. 11 large acrylic paintings showcasing objects of evidence that made an emotional imprint on me encapsulate the space. The background of each of these paintings is Vermi11ion. Vermi11ion’s deep crimson is created through alchemy when sulfur and mercury are combined. The spaces between these paintings subtly feature ten small white ghost portraits, representing the invisible surviving family.  On the floor directly under each painting are cones of white sand symbolizing how fast people are forgotten and the passage of time. The exhibition features sound inspired by my experience through the trial. The collaboration with three experimental string musicians, Cheyenne McCoy, Kya Millirons and Chazlen Rook, creates an experience of tension and evokes the texture of moments in the courtroom.

This exhibition is dedicated to victims, survivors, their families and to first responders of gun violence.
